Onion is known to Human civilization dating back to 5000 BC. It was only in 1492, Christopher Columbus introduced onion to the North America.
Different Varieties of Onions
In India it's known from Ancient time. Charaka recognised it's medicinal properties. The anti bacterial property of onion was known to Ayurveda. Conditions like asthma and respiratory tract infection can be reduced with the help of onions. The anti-inflammatory agents present in onion helps reduce the cell-inflammation. Modern day research has shown onion also has a compound that prevents osteoporosis.In Indian Cuisine, it's widely used except Jain Food and strict Swatik food.
Different recipe and cook book call for different Onions. Here we tried to show you some commonly used Onions with images to clear up the confusion.
